The Scholl Orthaheel range can be used to help treat different types of aches and pains. Many of these are may be linked to the way we walk and the forces that act on the feet as they hit the ground.

Stresses that act on the feet can lead to pain in the feet, such as heel pain or metatarsal (ball of foot) pain, or it could lead to pain in other parts of the body such as the knee or the lower back.

As we walk, with every step we take, the foot will go through two phases – it will spend some time touching the ground, this is called the stance phase, and some time moving through the air, this is called the swing phase.

When the foot is in contact with the ground it is experiencing forces acting on it and this is when stresses can develop, that could lead to pain.

Every time we take a step the outside edge of the heel hits the ground first, and then the rest of the foot starts to get more contact the ground, as the foot rolls over, turning the leg inwards as it moves. This movement happens with every step and is called pronation, it will cause some forces to affect the feet but they are usually distributed through the feet to prevent stresses and strains.

But the amount of pronation will be different in different people and 70% of us have a tendency for the feet to roll over so much that the feet start to flatten out on the ground, turning the leg further inwards.

When there is a lot of pronation during walking the foot rolls over, flattening the arch towards the ground. This movement causes the leg to rotate inwards, and as it does so it can change the alignment of the hips, the pelvis and the lower back. For some people these movements can lead to stresses in the tissue of the lower back that could result in lower back pain.

Sometimes the amount of pronation can be excessive and lead to stresses that affect the feet and other parts of the body. As pronation takes place with each and every step, these stresses can build up and may cause aches and pains. For more information on how this happens click on the pain types listed below.

Orthaheel Testimonials

“I was delighted to discover Scholl Orthaheel orthotics – they greatly relieved the pain in my feet and allowed me to walk with ease again. I used them daily in my slippers around the house and also in my walking boots. No matter how many different sets of shoes I shoved them in, they remained as intact and robust as the day I purchased them, which really impressed me.”
