A Verruca is the common name for a wart that appears on the foot on the foot and is caused by certain types of the human papilloma virus. It appears as a pale, slightly raised area often with small black dots in the centre.
Infection is more likely to occur if your skin is moist or broken. Wet, rough surfaces - in swimming pool or gym changing areas for instance - are thought to increase your chances of picking up the virus.
Wearing flip-flops in these areas, or verruca socks while swimming will reduce the likelihood of an infection. Keeping your feet clean and dry is also a good idea.
Verrucas are a type of wart that develop when your foot becomes infected with a particular virus. The virus is picked up directly when your foot touches the foot of someone else with the virus, or indirectly when your foot touches infected skin cells left on a surface - often changing-room floors in swimming pools or gyms.
They appear as pale, slightly raised spots. As they grow larger, the shape can resemble tiny cauliflowers, sometimes with black spots at the centre. If they're on the heel or the ball of the foot, they can be flattened and pushed inward by the weight of your body, making walking painful. Sometimes they grow into small clusters, known as mosaic verruca.
Verrucas can be removed by being frozen with Scholl Freeze Wart and Verruca Spray. Quick and easy, the entire treatment only takes minutes since the freezing agent itself needs only to be applied to the verruca for 3 to 5 seconds.
A single treatment may be sufficient, but more stubborn warts or verrucas may require repeat treatments. Alternatively, medicated gels and plasters can also remove verrucas and our range includes Scholl Seal and Heal Verruca Removal Gel and Scholl Verruca Removal Plasters, which contains Salicylic Acid. Always read the label.
