How to prevent a blister

Take steps to reduce friction:

  • Wear shoes that fit well (not too big and not too tight) to reduce rubbing and wear appropriate shoes for the activity you are doing
  • Keep feet dry by wearing socks or using specialist foot treatments to reduce sweating
  • Do not wear shoes barefoot, particularly in hot weather when the feet are more sweaty
  • Introduce / increase sports gradually so that your feet get used to the extra rubbing
  • Use specialist anti-friction socks for sports (or two pairs of socks)
  • Protect the feet as soon as you feel or see a hot spot – this is the first sign that a blister is going to develop
  • Protect areas that are prone to blistering with a low-friction dressing
